In preclinical general toxicity studies for medicine development, the microscopic evaluation of the brain is performed on coronal sections at three levels (cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem)
according to current regulatory requirements.
However, the brain is a heterogeneous organ, with region-specific physiologic activities, metabolic demands and susceptibility to toxicants. To examine the most relevant rat brain structures,

multiple sections are considered necessary. Therefore, we obtained a standard extensive rat brain sample for 8 sections using 8-day and 8-week old rats. Each section was characterized by
typical neuroantomic location as below; level 1: ependyma and subependymal,  level 2 : olfactory ventricle,  level 3 : lateral ventricle, level 4 : choroid plexus/lateral ventricle, level 5 :
pyramidal cell layer hippocam,  level 6 : 3rd ventricle/dorsal 3rd ventricle/hippocampus,  level 7 : 4th ventricle/lateral recess 4th ventricle,  level 8 : central canal.
